Grange-Falquet
Origin of the name Grange-Falquet
The place recalls the fields and farm buildings that the Falquet family, also spelt Farquet, owned in this area. In 1635 Jean Falquet bought plots between the bougeries of Chêne and the lands of Cologny. He soon sold them again, but the name « Granges-Falquet » stuck to the place. The building called Grange Falquet was reportedly a simple barn of this family at first.[2]
Founding of Grange-Falquet
In the Middle Ages the place was first the site of a leper house (maladière), « Quercus ». It owned land in the area and probably gave rise to the hamlet of Chêne. The Bernese seized its lands and granted them as fiefs. In the 17th century the Genevan Falquet family owned fields and farm buildings here, which left their name to the district. Grange-Falquet is now part of the municipality of Chêne-Bougeries.[1][2]
