Laconnex
Origin of the name Laconnex
Old forms « Laconay » in 1225 and « Lacunay » in 1231. According to a local explanation, the name reportedly comes from a certain Lacon, said to have settled in the area in the 1st century AD. This explanation is not confirmed.[3]
Founding of Laconnex
The village has been inhabited without interruption since Roman times, but it is not known who founded it. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Count of Genève, who ceded all his rights over Laconnex to the priory of Saint-Victor. A fortified house and a parish church dedicated to Notre-Dame are later attested there. Its history is mainly one of changes of sovereignty between Genève, Savoy and the Kingdom of Sardinia, which took it into the Reformation and then back to Catholicism, until it was assigned to the canton of Genève. There it first formed a municipality with Avusy and Soral, then with Soral alone, before becoming an independent municipality.[2][3]
