Origin of the name Les Granges

Also called Les Granges-sur-Salvan, the hamlet already bears the title « Les Granges sur Salvan » on a general view published around 1905 by the Wehrli brothers. The name itself has not been explained.[7][10]

Founding of Les Granges

Les Granges is a hamlet in the municipality of Salvan, above Vernayaz at about 1'100 m. When it took shape is unknown. The hamlets trail passes below the former Grand Hôtel, then drops into the combe des Granges, and the village keeps its village street.[1][3]

History of Les Granges

1891. Date of the building that now houses the Hôtel Balance.[2]

1926. A 1'270 m funicular links Vernayaz (452 m) with the upper station at Les Granges (1'095 m), a height difference of 643 m.[1]

1984. The Hôtel Balance begins welcoming guests at Les Granges.[2]

1992. The funicular stops running. It is dismantled and not replaced.[1]

1995. The Dailley gorge trail, which starts at Les Granges, is completely renovated.[6]

Historic sites in Les Granges

Start of the Dailley gorge. The trail leaves from the car park at the entrance to the village. Via walkways and stairs it climbs the Salanfe gorge to Van d'en Bas.[4][5]

Hôtel Balance. Vegetarian organic hotel in a building from 1891.[2]

Former funicular route. The hamlets trail climbs through the forest along the former SBB funicular between Vernayaz and Les Granges.[3][1]
