Origin of the name Miège

The name appears in 1226 as « Mieio ». The former German name « Miesen » is no longer used. Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[1]

Founding of Miège

Who founded Miège is not known, but graves from the Iron Age and the early Middle Ages show that the place has long been occupied. The village, clustered amid the vineyards on the right bank of the Rhône, lies west of the Raspille, a small stream that marks the boundary with German-speaking Upper Valais. In the 12th century it belonged to the episcopal lordship of Sierre. In the 15th century it appears as a « communitas » and was part of the middle third of the Contrée de Sierre, itself one third of the dizain of Sierre. The de Preux family later held the office of vidomne there. First part of the parish of Saint-Maurice-de-Laques (Mollens), Miège became a parish at the end of the 18th century, then a political municipality and a burgher community in the 19th century. A wine village, it has become a residential area of Sierre since the 1980s and is now part of Noble-Contrée.[1]
