Montagny
Origin of the name Montagny
The municipality keeps the name already borne by Montagny-la-Ville and Montagny-les-Monts, recorded around 1177 as "de Montaniaco". The decree of 2003 kept the name Montagny for the enlarged municipality, while Mannens and Grandsivaz became two villages.[4][5]
Founding of Montagny
Montagny took shape in two stages. On 1 January 2000 Montagny-la-Ville, on the right bank of the Arbogne, and Montagny-les-Monts, on the left bank, united under the name Montagny. On 1 January 2004 the municipality was enlarged by Mannens-Grandsivaz. It comprises the villages of Cousset, Montagny-la-Ville, Mannens, Grandsivaz, Montagny-les-Monts and Villarey, and the hamlets of Tours, Les Arbognes and Le Grabou. With 1'752 hectares it is the third largest municipality of the Fribourg Broye by area, on the border with the canton of Vaud and the districts of Glâne and Sarine.[1][2][5][6]
