Origin of the name Corcelles-près-Payerne

First mention in the form «Corsales» in 1235; the parish is mentioned from 1228. The name Corcelles is said to mean «small estate» (to be cross-checked). A mention in 1148, when Pope Eugene III confirmed that the church belonged to the monastery of Payerne, is also reported (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Corcelles-près-Payerne

The village lies on the Roman road Avenches-Payerne; remains of a Roman aqueduct that supplied Aventicum from Lake Seedorf have been found there. In the Middle Ages Corcelles always formed part of the domain of Payerne; the sources do not say who created the village.
