Progens

Canton of Fribourg · District: Veveyse · 264 inhabitants (2001, former municipality of Progens, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of La Verrerie

Origin of the name Progens

Recorded in 1324 as "Progin", the name remains unexplained. In the arms of La Verrerie, the red, yellow and blue pales recall Progens.[1][3]

Founding of Progens

Progens occupies a hill between the Broye and the Mionna, and its land also included the hamlet of La Verrerie, on the north-east slope. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the lady of Oron, partly to the counts of Gruyère, and to the lordship of Rue, a Savoyard castellany from the middle of the 13th century. At the end of the 18th century lignite mines and a glassworks were worked there, and the hamlet of La Verrerie formed around the latter. Progens is now part of the municipality of La Verrerie (merger of 2004), whose administration it houses.[1][3]

1914. Taken over by the Saint-Prex glassworks, the Progens glassworks closes. Coal is mined again from 1917 to 1921.[1]

2000. The municipality has 10 farms, and seven in ten working residents work elsewhere.[1]

2004. On 1 January Progens merges with Le Crêt and Grattavache to form the municipality of La Verrerie. Its municipal council had opted for this merger in March 2003, and the assembly had approved the agreement on 17 September 2003 by 44 votes to 4, with 1 abstention.[1][2]
