Randa
Origin of the name Randa
The village is first mentioned in 1305 as « Randa ». Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[1]
Founding of Randa
Randa is a municipality in the district of Visp, in the Mattertal (Nikolaital), comprising the village of Randa and the hamlets of Lerch, Wildi and Attermänze. From the 13th century to 1552, Randa belonged to the majorie, then the castellany of Naters. It then formed with Täsch a castellany belonging to the majorie of St. Niklaus (free jurisdiction). Its communal statutes date from 1593, and in 1798 Randa became a political municipality, separate from Täsch. In church matters, the village belonged to the great parish of St. Niklaus until a rectorate was founded in 1730, and then became a parish. Long dependent on poor farming and some livestock, the village, lying on the road to Zermatt, opened up to tourism after 1850 and soon had nearly thirty mountain guides. At the start of the 21st century, a large share of the inhabitants work in tourism and crafts, and water royalties bring the municipality considerable income.[1]
