Origin of the name Rebeuvelier

Name origin: first mentioned in 1148 as « Rebonvillier »; the old German name is « Rippertswiler ». The etymology of the name is not explained in the sources consulted.

Founding of Rebeuvelier

Rebeuvelier is first mentioned in 1148. Located east of the Delémont-Moutier road, the village was one of the thirteen « francs villages » (free villages) of the Delémont valley, in the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Its territory includes the summit of the Raimeux (1'303 m), given as the highest point of the canton. A mixed municipality from 1853 to 2018, Rebeuvelier is now part of the municipality of Courrendlin (merger of 1 January 2019).

History of Rebeuvelier

1148. First mention: « Rebonvillier ».

1441. First mention of the parish.

Around 1635-1772. The parish is united with that of Vermes.

Around 1720. Rebuilding of the church of Saints-Jean-et-Paul.

1793-1813. Rebeuvelier belongs to the French department of Mont-Terrible, then Haut-Rhin.

1797. The Roches glassworks is founded from scratch.

1815. Joins the canton of Bern (until 1978).

1853. Rebeuvelier becomes a mixed municipality (until 2018).

1867. The Roches glassworks closes after 70 years of operation.

1874-1935. The parish is again united with Vermes.

1959. Renovation of the church of Saints-Jean-et-Paul.

2004-2005. Archaeological excavation of the Roches glassworks, from May 2004 to February 2005, before construction of the A16 Transjurane motorway.

2019. On 1 January, Rebeuvelier merges with Vellerat into the municipality of Courrendlin.

Historic sites in Rebeuvelier

Church of Saints-Jean-et-Paul. Parish church rebuilt around 1720 and renovated in 1959; the parish is recorded from 1441.

The Raimeux. The summit of the Raimeux (1'303 m), on Rebeuvelier's territory, is given as the highest point of the canton of Jura.

Remains in Rebeuvelier

Roches glassworks. Glassworks founded from scratch in 1797 and active until 1867, set close to the Biel-Basel trade route, raw materials and a source of water power. Excavated from May 2004 to February 2005 before construction of the A16, the site revealed the development of the furnaces, the introduction of technical innovations, the whole glassmaking process and the daily life of the neighbouring hamlet.
