Ried-Brig
Origin of the name Ried-Brig
The locality appears in 1232 as « Riet », then in 1428 as « ried de briga ». The name is said to come from Alemannic « reuten » or « roden » (to clear land). Until 1993 the municipality was officially called Ried bei Brig.
Founding of Ried-Brig
Ried-Brig lies above Brig, on the Simplon road. Almost all place names are German, which shows the settlement of an Alemannic population over an older Celtic population. The hamlets of Ried, Schlüocht, Lowina, Obertermen and Brei appear in the 14th century as separate entities. They later united into a single municipality, which adopted statutes (Bauernzunft) in 1563. A Burgerschaft probably existed from the end of the 15th century. In 1646 Ried fixed its boundaries with Termen. In the 18th century pensions from foreign service and the Simplon trade brought some prosperity, but the construction of the pass road (1801-1805) and war contributions weighed heavily on the municipality. Ecclesiastically Ried belonged to the parish of Glis, from which it separated in 1901. Agriculture dominated until the Second World War, then declined rapidly. Lonza, the SBB and the Post became the main employers. At the beginning of the 21st century Ried-Brig is a sought-after residential municipality.
