Origin of the name Rossemaison

Name origin: first mentioned in 1462 in the form « Rosemason ». The old German name is « Rottmund ». The etymology is not explained in the sources consulted.

Founding of Rossemaison

Rossemaison is a municipality in the district of Delémont, next to that town. Neither founder nor founding date is known. Under the Ancien Régime the village belonged to the provostship of Moutier-Grandval (bishopric of Basel), in the Sous-les-Roches part that remained Catholic at the Reformation. It belongs to the parish of Courrendlin. Attached to the Bernese district of Moutier from 1815 to 1978, it chose the canton of Jura by plebiscite on 7 September 1975 and then joined the district of Delémont.

History of Rossemaison

1462. First mention of the village, in the form « Rosemason ».

Ancien Régime. Rossemaison is part of the provostship of Moutier-Grandval (bishopric of Basel), in the Sous-les-Roches part, which remains Catholic at the Reformation.

1793-1813. The village is French, in the department of Mont-Terrible, then Haut-Rhin.

1815-1978. Rossemaison is part of Bern, in the bailiwick and then the district of Moutier.

1854. Rossemaison becomes a mixed municipality.

1869-1870. Construction of the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette.

1969. Construction of a new chapel with the same dedication.

1974-1975. Jura plebiscites of June 1974 and March 1975.

1975. On 7 September Rossemaison chooses the canton of Jura.

1979. Rossemaison becomes part of the new canton of Jura, in the district of Delémont.

1983. The old chapel becomes a cultural centre.

Historic sites in Rossemaison

Old chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. Chapel built in 1869-1870, a cultural centre since 1983.

New chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. Chapel built in 1969 with the same dedication as the old one.

Old village core. The heart of the village preserves a few farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries, around which the residential zone has expanded greatly owing to the proximity of Delémont.
