Valeyres-sous-Montagny
Origin of the name Valeyres-sous-Montagny
First mentioned between 1139 and 1148 in the form «Valeriis». The name is said to come from the Roman family name Valerius and to designate the estates belonging to a Valerius (to be cross-checked). The addition «sous-Montagny» is recent and distinguishes the village from Valeyres-sous-Ursins and Valeyres-sous-Rances.
Founding of Valeyres-sous-Montagny
Remains are said to attest occupation in Roman times, probably a farming estate (villa) (to be cross-checked). None of the sources consulted names a founder of the village. In the Middle Ages Valeyres was part of the lordship of Montagny-le-Corbe (today Montagny-près-Yverdon), whose ruined castle still overlooks the village; this lordship is said to have belonged to the lords of Grandson before 1150, then to the Châlons from 1199 (to be cross-checked). After the Burgundian Wars Valeyres was incorporated into the bailiwick of Grandson, held jointly by Bern and Fribourg. The village has always belonged to the parish of Montagny. The inhabitants are nicknamed «lè Caquière».
