Canton of Fribourg · District: Glâne · 377 inhabitants (2000, former municipality of Villargiroud, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of Villorsonnens

Origin of the name Villargiroud

The village is recorded in 1259 as « Villargirot », then in 1305 as « Villargiroz ». The name is said to come from a form « Villa Geroldi », the estate of a man called Gerold.[1][2]

Founding of Villargiroud

Villargiroud lies on the western slope of the Gibloux. In 1259 four brothers of Villargirot held twenty-four poses of fields from the abbey of Humilimont as a hereditary fief. The small lordship was linked now to that of Orsonnens, now to the barony of Pont, and often changed hands. The village always belonged to the parish of Orsonnens. Agricultural, with livestock and fodder crops, it is gradually becoming residential. Villargiroud is now part of the municipality of Villorsonnens (merger of 2001).[1]
