Merger 2001 Canton of Fribourg · District: Glâne · 1'593 inhabitants (31.12.2025)

Origin of the name Villorsonnens

The name of the municipality joins the beginning of Villargiroud and Villarsiviriaux to that of Orsonnens.[3]

Founding of Villorsonnens

Villorsonnens came into being on 1 January 2001 from the union of Chavannes-sous-Orsonnens, Orsonnens, Villargiroud and Villarsiviriaux, under a decree of the Grand Council of 16 November 2000. The four villages are spread up the side of the Gibloux, from 680 m at Chavannes-sous-Orsonnens to 1'130 m above Villarsiviriaux. The municipality covers more than 1'547 ha, almost two thirds of it farmland or forest. It also includes the hamlet of Grange-la-Battiaz, a former municipality joined to Chavannes-sous-Orsonnens in 1866. In 2014 Villorsonnens refused to join a wider Glâne merger.[1][2][4][5][6]
