Origin of the name Villeneuve (FR)

The village is mentioned in 1182 in the form « Nova Villa ».[1]

Founding of Villeneuve (FR)

Villeneuve lies in the Broye plain, within the lordship of Surpierre, which already included it in 1380 and became a Fribourg bailiwick in 1536. When the neighbouring parish of Granges-près-Marnand turned Protestant, the village joined the parish of Surpierre, and a modest chapel was built. The inhabitants live from livestock, cereals and tobacco. A quarry of sandstone for furnaces and, since 1964, a precast concrete company complete this rural economy. Villeneuve is now part of the municipality of Surpierre (merger of 2017).[1][2][3]
