Origin of the name Besencens

Besencens appears in 1170 as "Besencens", the form it still bears, though the meaning of the name is not known.[1]

Founding of Besencens

Besencens is a scattered settlement on a rise north-east of Oron. In the Middle Ages it came under the lordship of Oron, and for a long time it shared a single municipality with Fiaugères. The village, in the parish of Saint-Martin, remained Catholic at the Reformation and has always lived mainly from livestock farming. Besencens is now part of the municipality of Saint-Martin (merger of 2004).[1]
