Le Flon

Merger 2004 Canton of Fribourg · District: Veveyse · 1'221 inhabitants (31.12.2025)

Origin of the name Le Flon

The municipality is named after the Flon, a right-bank tributary of the Broye that flows through the three former municipalities. The river rises in a marshy spot at Les Ecasseys, runs south to the east of Bouloz, Porsel and Pont, and joins the Broye at Châtillens. The merger commission proposed the name after a poll of the population. The place-names commission preferred "Porsel", because "Flond" is already a municipality in Graubünden and two other places are called Le Flon. The federal offices consulted accepted "Le Flon" without the addition "(FR)".[1][2][6]

Founding of Le Flon

Le Flon was born on 1 January 2004 from the union of Bouloz, Pont (Veveyse) and Porsel, three municipalities on the Lausanne-Fribourg axis between Oron-la-Ville and Romont. The three municipal assemblies approved the merger agreement on 10 June 2003, and the Grand Council ratified the merger by a decree of 8 October 2003. The new municipality then had 857 inhabitants (legal population at 31.12.2001) on 9.54 km². Its coat of arms combines those of the three former municipalities: on a red field, a gold saltire, a silver tower, a birch on a green mount and a black boar.[1][2][3][5][7]

History of Le Flon

2000. On 14 June Bouloz, Pont and Porsel hold a first meeting to study a merger, then set up a merger commission.[2]

2002. On 22 March the merger commission proposes the name "Le Flon" to the cantonal municipalities office, chosen after a poll of the population.[2]

2003. The place-names commission proposes "Porsel" on 10 January. At a meeting on 10 March the merger commission keeps "Le Flon". The draft agreement goes to the municipalities office on 28 March, and the population is briefed on 6 May.[2]

2003. On 10 June the three assemblies approve the agreement: 64 yes to 2 no in Bouloz, 36 to 15 in Pont and 122 to 2 in Porsel. The Porsel assembly, which at first wanted to keep its own name, comes round to "Le Flon".[2][3]

2003. The Council of State sends its message to the Grand Council on 19 August. The decree of 8 October gives the municipality the name Le Flon and grants it merger aid of 474'281 francs, paid from 2005.[2][3][4]

2004. Le Flon comes into being on 1 January. Bouloz, Pont and Porsel become village names, and their citizens become citizens of the new municipality. Together with La Verrerie and Saint-Martin, created the same day, the Veveyse district goes from 15 to 9 municipalities.[1][3][10]

2005. The municipality's first financial year closes with a surplus. The new school in Porsel, costing 1.1 million francs, of which 470'000 francs come from the merger aid, is due to be finished at the end of April.[8]
