Origin of the name Pont

Pont is recorded in 1152 as "de Ponto". No more precise explanation of the name has been put forward.[1]

Founding of Pont

Pont, at 770 m the lowest of the three villages of Le Flon, is a scattered settlement that grew up around a lordship. The Illens family, recorded from the 12th century, held a castle there at the spot called Les Rochettes, and the lordship came under the castellany of Rue under the house of Savoy. Long a farming village, it had a small straw-plaiting trade at the end of the 19th century before becoming residential. Pont is now part of the municipality of Le Flon (merger of 2004).[1][4]
