Porsel

Canton of Fribourg · District: Veveyse · 415 inhabitants (2001, former municipality of Porsel, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of Le Flon

Origin of the name Porsel

The name appears between 1147 and 1163 as "Porcels", with no established etymology. In 2003 the place-names commission would have liked to give it to the merged municipality, and the Porsel assembly at first wanted to keep it, but "Le Flon" prevailed.[1][2]

Founding of Porsel

Porsel lies on the Oron-Romont road, at 820 m. In the Middle Ages it depended on the lords of Oron, and it belonged to the parish of Saint-Martin before becoming the centre of a parish itself. A molasse quarry was worked there in the 19th century, and peat was cut during the Second World War. Long given over to livestock farming, the village grew with new houses after the 1980s. Porsel is now part of the municipality of Le Flon (merger of 2004).[1]
