Mossel

Canton of Fribourg · District: Glâne · 122 inhabitants (2000, former municipality of Mossel, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of Ursy

Origin of the name Mossel

In the mid-12th century the place is written « Moncels », « Muncels » or « Monticulis ». The name is said to come from the Latin « Monticelam », the little hill. The forms « Mones » and « Mossey » are also found.[1][2]

Founding of Mossel

Mossel consists of a village and scattered hamlets. In the first half of the 12th century the place belonged to the family of Saint-Martin-du-Chêne, lords of Bioley. In 1245 Guillaume gave it, with its rights of jurisdiction, to the Cistercian convent of Hautcrêt, which ran a grange there. The lords of Prez and of Rue also held property here. The village lives from fodder crops and livestock. Mossel is now part of the municipality of Ursy (merger of 2001).[1]
