Origin of the name Chandolin

Form « Eschandulyns » around 1250. Other forms are reportedly attested: « Escandulyns » (1250), « Essandulin » (1685), « Zandolin » (1822), as well as an old German name « Schändlis ». The etymology is debated; the hypothesis regarded as most likely, though not yet confirmed, derives the name from a Latin « scamn-ol-inu », an earth bank between two furrows.[1]

Founding of Chandolin

Chandolin, in the Val d'Anniviers, comprised the village of Chandolin, Soussillon and Fang, on a territory ranging from 755 m to 2'700 m. The village, at 1'936 m on a very steep slope, is one of the highest in Switzerland. The mayens (seasonal pastures) lie below it. Until 1798 it belonged to the episcopal castellany of Anniviers, in the dizain (district) of Sierre. A community is mentioned in the 16th century and, around 1600, Chandolin was a third of the quarter of Luc. Incorporated into Luc in 1798, it became a municipality in 1821. Life long rested on seasonal transhumance. In the 20th century Chandolin became a summer and winter resort. A former municipality of the district of Sierre, Chandolin is now in the municipality of Anniviers (merger of 1 January 2009).[1][3]
