Origin of the name Guttet

The village is first mentioned in 1261 as « de gottet ». The form « Goutet » reportedly appears between 1715 and 1720. What the name means is not yet known.[1]

Founding of Guttet

Guttet is a mountain village at an altitude of 1'345 m on the north slope of the Rhône valley, near Leuk. The former municipality comprised the main village and the hamlets of Grächmatten and Wiler, slightly lower down, where the newest buildings stand. Before 1798, Guttet belonged to the third known as Von Zuben auf of the dizain of Leuk. In church matters the village belonged to the parish of Leuk until a rectorate was created in 1822, raised to a parish in 1863. The community adopted communal statutes in 1520, renewed in 1669 and in 1769-1772, and has had a town hall since 1630. Since the late 20th century, the inhabitants have lived mainly in Wiler and Grächmatten and work in the valley. Guttet is now in the municipality of Guttet-Feschel (merger of 2000).[1]
