Origin of the name Les Cheneviers

The plant bears the name of the locality Les Cheneviers, in the municipality of Aire-la-Ville. The origin of this name has not been explained.

Founding of Les Cheneviers

As early as 1898 the Grand Council voted the first credits for a waste treatment plant. The State of Genève built and ran the first Cheneviers plant, on the banks of the Rhône in the municipality of Aire-la-Ville. Put into service in June 1966 at a cost of 37 million francs, it had two furnaces and a capacity of 100'000 tonnes of waste a year.[1][2][6]
