Neubrück
Origin of the name Neubrück
The place was formerly called Niederrusen, also spelt Niederrussen. It only took the name Neubrück, «Zer Niiwu Briggu», after the new bridge over the Vispa was built. The bridge and chapel are referred to as «zer Niwu Briggu». The name Niederrusen itself remains unexplained.[1][2][4][8]
Founding of Neubrück
Neubrück lies on the Vispa between Visp and Stalden. Its stone arch bridge, the Ritibrücke, is the work of Hans Pinella, who built it for the Zenden of Visp on the model of Ulrich Ruffiner's bridges. Niederrusen was then a self-governing community, with the hamlets of Milachru, Riti and Riedji. A former municipality, the place is now part of the municipality of Stalden (VS).[1][3][8]
History of Neubrück
1599. Construction of the stone arch bridge of Neubrück, one of the two surviving 16th-century bridges of this type in Stalden, together with the Chibrücke of 1544.[2][3]
1668. The will of Christian im Esch is the first record of a chapel in the hamlet of Niederrussen.[9]
1727. The inhabitants decide to rebuild the chapel. The present building, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, dates from this rebuilding.[9]
1817. The former municipality of Niederrusen, today Neubrück, is united with Stalden (1807 according to another source).[1][2][8]
1854-1861. The draughtsman Gabriel Loppé and the lithographer Théodore Muller publish a colour view of «Neubrück entre Viège et St. Nicolas», printed by Lemercier in Paris.[5]
1922-1923. Construction of the Visp-Stalden carriage road, the first valley road, which crosses the Vispa at Neubrück.[2]
1980. The chapel undergoes a thorough renovation.[9]
2000. In autumn, floods of the Beiterbach damage the chapel and the hamlet. A complete restoration of the chapel follows.[9]
