Origin of the name Pinchat

The origin of the name has not yet been explained, and no dated first written mention is known.

Founding of Pinchat

Nobody knows when the hamlet first appeared. Pinchat lies on the plateau of the same name, between Vessy and Carouge, and is split between two municipalities. The plateau and the Pinchat-Sur-Rang and Pinchat-La Tour neighbourhoods belong to Veyrier, whereas the locality of Pinchat proper and the Pinchat-La Tambourine neighbourhood lie in Carouge. The clay of the plateau, like that of Vessy, allowed tile works to be set up. The farming estate, which grew out of a burgher's property, remained set aside for agriculture while villas gradually spread over the rest of the plateau.[1][3]

History of Pinchat

Burgundian period. The Pinchat forest, a Burgundian royal domain, reportedly supplied wood for the upkeep and heating of King Gundobad's palace at Carouge.[2]

1589. On 22 July, at Pinchat, 600 Genevans put to flight the Duke of Savoy's men-at-arms. These were reportedly 6'000 strong, a figure that remains uncertain.[2]

1930s. The marshes between the Vessy plateau and Pinchat are drained.

1931. Villas begin to be built on the Pinchat plateau, during a period of local recession.

1950s. Under the zoning plan, the Pinchat, Sierne and Vessy estates, which grew out of burghers' properties, remain reserved for farming.

Historic sites in Pinchat

Pinchat plateau. Plateau overlooking the Arve between Vessy and Carouge, with the Pinchat-Sur-Rang and Pinchat-La Tour neighbourhoods (municipality of Veyrier) and the Réserve Pinchat-Vessy locality.

Tile works. The clay of Pinchat and Vessy allowed tile works to be set up. When they were built is not known.[1]
