Rossenges
Origin of the name Rossenges
First written mention: «Rossenge» in 1309; the place is sometimes called «L'Abbaye de Rossenges». The name is said to be formed from a Germanic personal name such as Rozzo or Rotzo and the Germanic suffix -ingas, meaning «among those of Rozzo's clan» (to be cross-checked).
Founding of Rossenges
The sources consulted give neither a founding date nor a founder. An early medieval necropolis at the place called Biregard shows early occupation of the site. The commune consists of the hamlets of Rossenges and L'Abbaye, on the left bank of the Bressonne, south-west of Moudon. Rossenges was part of Moudon until 1749, when it was separated to form a commune with its own statutes, approved by Sigismond de Cerjat, lord of Syens and Rossenges.
