Origin of the name Seleute

The village is first recorded in 1180 as « Celute ». Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[1]

Founding of Seleute

Neither the date nor the founder of Seleute is known. The village, set on a terrace on the northern slope of the Doubs valley probably at the foot of the Lomont, belonged until 1793 to the chapter of Saint-Ursanne, in the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Its territory was then divided into six fiefs. Seleute always belonged to the parish of Saint-Ursanne. The former municipality comprised the village, the farm of Monnat on the right bank of the Doubs and the farms of La Cernie Dessus and La Cernie Dessous on the left bank. Part of the canton of Bern from 1815 to 1978, then of the canton of Jura, it is now in the municipality of Clos du Doubs (merger of 1 January 2009).[1]
