Origin of the name Montenol

The first mention, as « Montenot », dates from 1173 (or 1137). The name may derive from a contraction of « mont » (mountain) and the Germanic personal name « Taginald ».[1][2]

Founding of Montenol

Neither the date nor the founder of Montenol is known. Its territory was part of the courtine of the chapter of Saint-Ursanne, divided into four colonges to be cleared and then farmed: the hamlet thus grew out of the chapter's development of this land. It belonged to the provostry of Saint-Ursanne, a bailiwick of the Bishopric of Basel, and always depended on the parish of Saint-Ursanne. A mixed municipality from 1836 and part of the canton of Jura from 1979, Montenol is now part of the municipality of Clos du Doubs (merger of 1 January 2009).[1][2]
