The place is mentioned in 1477/1485 in the form « Cabane de Bogiez ». The etymology of this name is not explained in the sources consulted.
Founding of Chavannes-de-Bogis
Chavannes-de-Bogis grew out of land clearance: from the mid-13th century the Cistercian monks of Bonmont Abbey entrusted this clearing to a few abergataires, tenants responsible for bringing it into cultivation. Together with the lords of Gex, the abbey held rights of justice there and collected various dues through its castellan of La Rippe.

1990. The municipality has 986 inhabitants, compared with 137 in 1970.
2000. The municipality has 1'048 inhabitants; a motel, a shopping centre, a publishing house and craftsmen provide many jobs there.
2025. The municipality has 1'423 inhabitants on 31 December.
