The place is mentioned in the 14th century in the form « Vilar Luczon ». The present name La Robellaz and its origin are not explained by the sources consulted.

Founding of La Robellaz

La Robellaz is a hamlet in the municipality of Essertines-sur-Yverdon, in the Gros-de-Vaud district, lying on the left bank of the Buron, south-west of the village of Essertines, where the Buron separates Essertines from Belmont. The sources consulted do not say when or by whom the hamlet was founded. It appears in the 14th century as an estate of the abbey of Lac de Joux. Together with Epautheyres and Nonfoux, it is one of the hamlets of the municipality of Essertines-sur-Yverdon, to which it has belonged since 1803.

History of La Robellaz

14th century. The place is mentioned in the form « Vilar Luczon »; it is then an estate of the abbey of Lac de Joux.

1318. Othon Ier de Grandson acquires the estate and cedes it to the La Lance charterhouse.

1536. Bernese conquest: the estate is secularised and incorporated into the bailiwick of Yverdon.

1577. La Robellaz is raised to a noble fief; it later passes to the Saussure, Hennezel, Charrière and Plessis-Gouret families.

1766. The hamlet has 8 hearths.

1798. End of Bernese rule; the hamlet regains its autonomy (to be cross-checked).

1803. After the abolition of feudal rights, the hamlet is attached to the municipality of Essertines-sur-Yverdon, while keeping partial administrative autonomy.

1871. End of the administrative autonomy of La Robellaz.

1990. A partial land-use plan limits residential development in the hamlet.

2008. The municipality of Essertines-sur-Yverdon, which includes La Robellaz, joins the new Gros-de-Vaud district.

Historic sites in La Robellaz

The protected hamlet. Small rural hamlet on the left bank of the Buron, on the boundary with Belmont-sur-Yverdon. Since the partial land-use plan of 1990, its residential development has been limited to preserve its character as a hamlet.

Cider press and artisan soap works. In 2009 the hamlet was home to a cider press and an artisan soap works.
