Suchy

Canton of Vaud · District: Jura-Nord vaudois · 672 inhabitants (31.12.2025)

Origin of the name Suchy

The village is mentioned in 885 as «Solpiaco id est Suzchie». The name is said to derive from the Roman family name Sulpius (to be cross-checked). The inhabitants are nicknamed the Sécherons.

Founding of Suchy

The site was occupied in Roman times: a burial and tile remains of a Roman dwelling, at the place called Meley, have been found there, as well as an early medieval cemetery. None of the sources consulted names a founder of the village. In 885 Emperor Charles the Fat ceded Suchy to a vassal of Margrave Rudolf, and from 888 these lands passed to the Church of Lausanne (to be cross-checked). The village then changed hands several times, from the lordship of Bavois in the 12th century to the bishop of Lausanne, then to the lords of Grandson and Belmont. In 1367 Othon de Grandson-Belmont, having taken back all the seigneurial rights, granted the inhabitants a charter of liberties.
